Session Description:

For IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc), it is of vital importance that we provide opportunities for school-aged children to learn about communication engineering technologies to stimulate an interest in pursuing a career in this area.  For the last few years, ComSoc has been working to create resources that can be used by school-aged children, their teachers, parents, and volunteers to support learning more about communications engineering.  In an effort to expand the reach of these resources, IEEE ComSoc volunteers have designed a program to provide teachers with guidance, resources and materials to take back to their classrooms to use with their students to learn more about a selection of communication engineering topics.  This session will provide local Montreal teachers with some background information and then offer opportunities to learn more about specific activities that they can do with their students in the classroom.  Local volunteers and others interested in learning more about this program are welcome to attend.  Space is limited for this session.  If you are interested in attending, please complete this form.

Speakers:

Stefano Giordano is full professor at the Department of Information Engineering of the University of Pisa where he is the responsible of the Telecommunication Networks Laboratories giving lectures both at the University of Pisa and the Italian Navy Academy. He is senior member of the IEEE Comsoc  and was Chair of the CSIM Technical Committee and at present chair of the TACTILE INTERNET TC and of the Comsoc Italy Chapter. He is author of more that 300 papers on peer reviewed international conferences and journals on the practical and theoretical aspect of modern networks including SDN, NFV and IoT. He was the responsible for the participation of the University of Pisa to the Euro-NGI (Next Generation Internet in Europe) Network of Excellence. He participated to the EU call  “Innovative ways to make science education and scientific careers attractive to young people” participating to the project  “Exploiting Ubiquitous Computing, Mobile Computing and the Internet of Things to promote STEM Education”. Stefano is currently leading ComSoc’s Pre-University STEM Working Group.

Joyce Mwangama received her Ph.D., M.Sc., and B.Sc(Eng) in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Cape Town (South Africa) in 2017, 2011 and 2008, respectively. She is an Associate Professor and currently heads the Telkom Centre for Broadband Networks and Applications research in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Cape Town. Joyce's research is in smart city platforms, 5G-enabled testbeds, and digital health solutions. Beyond academia, She actively contributes to policy-making in 5G as Convenor of the Research and Development working group, in the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa 5G Forum. She also has a role in the IEEE Communication Society Women Committee (WICE) to foster inclusivity and diversity in STEM fields.
